Amazon Ends Its Era of Cheap Hardware With Sharp Price Hikes Across Echo and Kindle Lines
Amazon repriced its Echo, Kindle, Fire TV, and eero product lines as of August 2026, with entry-level devices absorbing the steepest increases.

According to reporting by The Verge and Fortune published August 21–22, 2026, the Echo Dot is up 60% and the base Kindle up 36%, while Ring cameras, doorbells, and the Echo Studio were not adjusted. Amazon attributed the change to component costs it said it had absorbed until this point.
Entry-Level Devices Bear the Increase
The Echo Dot and base Kindle have historically functioned as Amazon's lowest-friction hardware — devices priced below the threshold of hesitation. That structure no longer holds. At 60% on the Echo Dot and 36% on the base Kindle, the absolute dollar increase remains modest within the broader consumer electronics market, but the percentage shift changes the impulse-buy calculation. Amazon told Fortune the cause is significant increases in memory and storage component costs — a corporate statement that remains unverified rather than an independently confirmed component-cost timeline.
What Was Spared, and What It Signals
Ring cameras, doorbells, and the Echo Studio were excluded from the August adjustment. The selectivity tracks Amazon's hardware strategy: home security remains an entry point where pricing friction directly affects attach rates, while voice hardware competes on price against Google Nest and Apple HomePod mini. The Verge noted Apple also raised HomePod mini prices in some markets this summer. The structural context differs. Apple sells hardware as the primary revenue line. Amazon uses hardware as a funnel into Prime, Audible, Kindle Unlimited, and Alexa-driven service consumption. A more expensive funnel changes the conversion math at the bottom.
The Component Market Sets the Timeline
Whether this repricing is cyclical or structural depends on memory and storage commodity pricing, not Amazon's commercial calendar. NAND and DRAM contract pricing operates on supplier lead times, fab utilization, and inventory cycles that move independently of retail promotions. Buyers evaluating an Echo Dot, Kindle, or Fire TV purchase should compare current third-party listings against MSRP. Entry-level Amazon hardware has historically been discounted heavily through Prime Day and seasonal events; that discount now sits on a higher base price. The data shows the on-ramp to the Amazon ecosystem just got steeper.
