The central constraint is architectural. iCloud is not merely a file locker on iOS. It is the only service in this group that can create and restore a full iPhone system backup. Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, pCloud, Proton Drive, and Jottacloud can synchronize selected files, camera uploads, and app-managed folders. They do not replace iCloud Backup.

iCloud remains the system backup layer

Monthly pricing: the low entry price is not the low unit cost
Storage plans are marketed as capacity blocks. The useful comparison is monthly cost per gigabyte at the listed tier. This is not a complete measure of value: integration, included software, privacy model, and account sharing can change the result. The 50 GB iCloud+ and 100 GB Google Drive or OneDrive plans effectively cost the same per gigabyte: roughly two cents each month. The difference is not price. It is where the capacity sits and which operating system functions can use it directly.
Google's 15 GB free tier is numerically stronger than Apple's 5 GB. However, it is shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. An account with years of email attachments can consume the allocation before any iPhone media archive is considered. That shared quota is a material limitation, not a footnote.
OneDrive also provides 5 GB at no cost, matching iCloud's free capacity. Its 100 GB standalone plan starts at $1.99 per month. The Microsoft 365 Personal plan costs $6.99 per month and includes 1 TB, reducing the storage rate to roughly 0.70 cents per GB. But storage is not the only component being purchased. The plan includes Microsoft's productivity software. For an iPhone owner who does not use that software, the nominal storage value is overstated.
Google Drive's 2 TB plan at $9.99 per month is the lowest per-GB rate among the fixed 2 TB plans in this set, at approximately 0.50 cents per GB per month, lower than Dropbox Plus at roughly 0.60 cents per GB. Google Drive and iCloud converge near half a cent per GB at their 2 TB and 12 TB reference tiers. That convergence is expected. Large storage plans are priced to retain high-volume users. The practical question is whether an iPhone owner needs the capacity, not whether the largest plan produces an attractive fraction on a spreadsheet.
Google Drive versus iCloud on iPhone: speed is not the differentiator that matters
There is no reliable universal figure for Google Drive versus iCloud on iPhone speed. Upload and download behavior changes with Wi-Fi throughput, cellular policy, server location, battery state, Low Power Mode, background execution limits, file count, and the application's own transfer queue.
A 20 GB video archive and 20 GB of small documents do not produce the same result. File-count overhead can dominate the latter. iOS may also defer background work when an app is not active, while first-party iCloud processes have deeper system integration.
The measurable distinction is operational rather than a single transfer-rate number:

For native photo management, iCloud has the cleanest data path. For mixed Android, Windows, web, and iPhone environments, Google Drive or OneDrive can reduce friction. Dropbox remains viable for teams and established shared-folder workflows, but its 2 GB free tier is not usable as a modern iPhone media buffer.
The battery variable should not be ignored. Repeated camera uploads, background indexing, and large-file transfers create radio activity and storage I/O. These processes consume power. The exact drain depends on network conditions and cannot be generalized across providers, but duplicating the same photo library into iCloud Photos, Google Photos, and Dropbox is a predictable source of redundant background traffic.
pCloud changes the model with lifetime pricing
pCloud is structurally different. Instead of requiring a recurring monthly fee, it offers lifetime plans ranging from $199 for 500 GB to $1,190 for 10 TB.
The initial payment is not equivalent to a monthly rate. It is a prepaid storage commitment. Its value depends on the retention period, the service remaining available, and the user's ability to stay within the purchased capacity. A 500 GB plan at $199 has an upfront cost of about 39.8 cents per GB. The 10 TB plan at $1,190 reduces that upfront figure to about 11.9 cents per GB.
Those numbers look expensive beside a monthly plan because they are not amortized. The break-even calculation is more useful.
Against iCloud's 50 GB tier at $0.99 per month, a $199 pCloud plan reaches a simple payment break-even after approximately 201 months, or nearly 17 years. That is not a direct capacity comparison: pCloud's 500 GB plan is ten times larger. Against a 500 GB-equivalent recurring storage cost, the horizon shortens, but the comparison still depends on the plan actually used.
Against a 2 TB subscription at around $10 to $12 per month, a large lifetime plan can reach a financial break-even point within several years. The issue is not arithmetic. It is service risk and workflow fit. A lifetime plan transfers more risk from the provider to the buyer at the moment of purchase.
pCloud is therefore a narrow fit:
1. It works for a stable, long-lived archive with predictable capacity requirements.
2. It works better for files than for OS-dependent iPhone state.
3. It does not eliminate the need for iCloud storage if iPhone backup is required.
4. It should not be treated as a zero-risk substitute for a monthly service merely because the invoice is paid once.
For users storing records tied to staking, lending, or other digital-asset income activity, the storage provider is also not the security model. Recovery phrases, private keys, and authentication backups need separate handling. Putting them into a general cloud folder without encryption discipline converts a storage decision into an account-security exposure.
Lifetime storage is a financing model. It is not a technical substitute for iCloud Backup.
Proton Drive and Jottacloud occupy specialized positions
Proton Drive starts with 1 GB free. Its paid plans begin at $4.99 per month for 15 GB and reach $12.99 per month for 500 GB. The effective cost per GB is high relative to mass-market storage services. At 15 GB, the plan works out to more than 33 cents per GB per month. At 500 GB, it remains about 2.60 cents.
That price structure is intentional. Proton Drive is positioned around privacy rather than capacity efficiency. A user paying for it is buying a service model and a security posture, not the lowest photo-storage rate. For an iPhone that needs routine device backup plus a large media library, it is difficult to justify Proton as the only paid storage allocation. It can make sense as a separate repository for selected documents.
Jottacloud presents the inverse proposition. It offers 5 GB free and an unlimited plan for one user at $11.99 per month. Unlimited plans cannot be reduced to a fixed price per GB because the denominator changes with use. At 500 GB, the implied rate is 2.40 cents per GB. At 2 TB, it falls to roughly 0.60 cents. At 5 TB, it falls again to approximately 0.24 cents.
The model becomes economically coherent only at high stored volume. A 100 GB user is paying for unused capacity. An archive-heavy user may see a clear advantage, provided the service's iOS workflow and desktop support match the required file patterns.
The efficient iPhone setup is usually two-tiered
The false choice is iCloud versus a third-party service. The better configuration separates system recovery from bulk storage.
A practical allocation has three layers:
- iCloud capacity for system backup. Size this around the actual iPhone backup footprint, not the entire photo archive by default.
- A cross-platform provider for active files. Google Drive is rational where Gmail and Google Workspace are already in use. OneDrive is rational where Microsoft 365 and Windows PCs are the primary environment.
- A specialized archive only where the economics justify it. pCloud can fit a stable long-term archive. Jottacloud can fit high-volume single-user storage. Proton Drive can fit selected privacy-sensitive documents.

Do not run identical full-resolution libraries across multiple services unless redundancy is the explicit goal. The consequence is duplicated billing, additional local cache pressure, more background uploads, and a higher probability of version conflicts. A clean architecture assigns each service a defined dataset.
For example, iCloud can retain iPhone backup and the active Photos library. Google Drive or OneDrive can retain project documents and desktop-accessible folders. A separate encrypted archive can hold cold data. That structure is easier to audit than a collection of overlapping automatic uploads.
Verdict: buy iCloud first, then buy capacity where the data sits
Buy iCloud+ if the iPhone backup exceeds 5 GB. There is no equivalent third-party replacement for that function. The $0.99 50 GB tier is the minimum operational subscription for many users.
Buy Google Drive or OneDrive alongside iCloud if the workflow extends to Windows, Gmail, Google Workspace, or Microsoft 365. Their entry-level 100 GB plans cost essentially the same per GB as iCloud's 50 GB tier, while providing better cross-platform file handling.
Buy Dropbox only if its shared-folder workflow is already required. Its 2 TB rate is competitive, but the $11.99 starting price is excessive for low-capacity iPhone use.
Buy pCloud or Jottacloud only after calculating the actual archive size and retention horizon. Lifetime and unlimited plans are efficient under specific volume assumptions. They are not default choices.
Buy Proton Drive for privacy requirements, not price efficiency. Its unit economics do not compete with mainstream storage tiers.
The data shows no universal best cloud storage service for iPhone. There is one non-negotiable service: iCloud for full device backup. Everything else should be selected by capacity curve, desktop environment, and the specific files that need to move.
