Comparing Apple Education Discounts and Best Buy Anniversary Sales
CNN's back-to-school deal tracker dropped this week, and Mashable's Best Buy anniversary coverage lit up at the same time.

Two competing Apple deal windows are open simultaneously, and the math between them is where the actual savings live.
Apple's Education Play vs Best Buy's Receipt
CNN reports Apple is offering up to a $150 gift card — not a direct price cut — on qualifying MacBook or iPad purchases through the Education Store. Parents, students, and teachers qualify. The promotion expires Aug. 27. A gift card attached to a purchase is not the same as a discount; the buyer still pays full sticker and Apple kicks back a slice in store credit. Read the fine print before treating it as a price floor.
Mashable's coverage of Best Buy's 60th Anniversary Sale — running through Sunday, Aug. 23 — is where the hard numbers sit. The MacBook Pro 16-inch with M4 Max and 48GB RAM drops $500, from $3,899 to $3,399. That is a 12.8% cut and the deepest discount in the stack. The MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5) sheds only $150, roughly 7.5% off MSRP, which barely qualifies as a sale. The MacBook Air 13-inch (M5, 16GB, 1TB) hits $1,499 after $100 off.
The MacBook Neo is the warning flag. CNN notes Apple launched it earlier this year at $599, then hiked prices later in the summer. Mashable lists it at Best Buy starting at $699 with a $25 Starbucks gift card attached. That gift card is marketing ornament. The launch price was the real deal, and it is gone.
iPads, iPhone Air, and the AirPods Math
The M4 iPad Air 11-inch (256GB) drops $100 to $749. The M5 iPad Pro 13-inch (512GB) lands at $1,599, also down $100. Neither is a record low; both are reasonable entries, nothing more.
The iPhone Air unlocked at a flat $160 off across every storage tier — 512GB at $1,039.99, 1TB at $1,239.99 — is the cleaner play. No trade-in dance, any carrier. Mashable's reviewer called it the "sexiest iPhone" he has tested, which is editorial color, not financial argument, but the flat $160 across the lineup is unusual and worth flagging.
On audio, AirPods Pro 3 are down $59 to their second-lowest price. AirPods 4 shed $30 from the $129 standard rate. AirPods 4 with ANC drop $34. AirPods Max 2 are down $120, a rare move on the flagship over-ear. For students replacing earbuds every academic cycle, the base AirPods 4 is the lowest cost-per-year play. The Max 2 is where premium buyers finally see real depreciation.
When to Click Buy
Best Buy closes Aug. 23. Apple's education promo closes Aug. 27. If you qualify for both and hold a My Best Buy Plus or Total membership — which returns 10% back in rewards on most purchases — the stack is straightforward: Best Buy for the MacBook Pro 16-inch and the $500 cut, education portal for the gift card credit on anything else. If you do not qualify for the education store, the Best Buy window is the only real play, and it closes first. Skip the MacBook Neo unless you accept the post-hike pricing.
